Las Cruces to Keep Crosses: Jonathan Munk

Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico, will not be forced to change their city logo, according to an AP Story. The lawsuit alleged the current Las Cruces logo, which includes two crosses, is a violation of the first amendment.

But seeing as how Las Cruces means “The Crosses” in Spanish, what else could you put in the city’s logo? I suppose Las Cruces could do as the Red Cross has recently, and create an new icon to appease those who see the logo as a religious statement. The relief organization recently added this red diamond shape for the Israeli market, adding the shape to a repertoire that includes the famous cross and crescent shapes the Red Cross calls “Healing Symbols.”

Burger King ad offends: Jonathan Munk

A Burger King ad that aired in the UK recently escaped being banned because it was “Offensive to Cows,” according to Brand Republic.

The ad featured a cow walking in the background wearing a Burger King logo. Some viewers thought the image of a cow wearing a Burger King logo was offensive, saying it implied the cow was on his way to becoming a burger.

Burger King’s response: “There was no deliberate intention to link the product to the animal.”

BK is not the first company to use cows as moving billboards. Here are a few others.

Google Holiday Logos: Jonathan Munk

Here is an interesting blog featuring some of Google’s most interesting holiday logos: Google Logos Collection.

Google logo

Google is one of the pioneers in the seasonal and holiday logo landscape, and with graphic design services becoming more affordable, an increasing number of businesses can now afford to participate. Designing a holiday version of a company logo is a fun way to spruce up your image for a while and help transform it from looking “Corporate” to appearing “Approachable.”
