Las Cruces to Keep Crosses: Jonathan Munk

Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico, will not be forced to change their city logo, according to an AP Story. The lawsuit alleged the current Las Cruces logo, which includes two crosses, is a violation of the first amendment.

But seeing as how Las Cruces means “The Crosses” in Spanish, what else could you put in the city’s logo? I suppose Las Cruces could do as the Red Cross has recently, and create an new icon to appease those who see the logo as a religious statement. The relief organization recently added this red diamond shape for the Israeli market, adding the shape to a repertoire that includes the famous cross and crescent shapes the Red Cross calls “Healing Symbols.”
