New Season, New Logo

By Kristina Schroeder

Ahh, opening day of baseball season. So full of new fields, new managers (Bochy! How could you betray me!), new players, and new… logos?

The Arizona Diamondbacks will be unveiling more than the return of Johnson next week, as they take the field in “Sedona Red” and black as opposed to the usual teal and purple. The decision was first announced in September of 2006, but apparently has been in the works for quite some time.

The purple and teal model was deemed ‘unmarketable’ after the first few years of use by the Arizona franchise. Most media outlets complained that the colors were too hard to copy and came out blue and black instead of teal and purple. So now, as if we need another baseball team in red and black, the Diamondbacks are jumping on the color bandwagon. Behold the new logo below:

They’ve also decided to bring the ‘D’ logo to the spotlight rather than the trusty old ‘A.’ Hats, uniforms, jackets, etc. are all sporting the swooping tail of a snake along side the word “D-backs.” (Personal Opinion Moment: Is Diamondbacks really too long of a word to print? Maybe stick to just Arizona. Or nothing at all. But D-backs? Really?)

Anyway… good luck to Arizona, I mean the D-backs. Maybe their makeover will bring them the luck of the Angels and Red Sox. Or maybe being red and black will never be as good as being blue and white. Go Padres!

LogoDesign.com Podcast 6: Fusing Graphics & Text

Making the graphics and text in your logo designs match is not easy to do, but knowing how to do it can be the difference between a timeless, wonderful design and an awkward mark that doesn’t sit well or make a lasting impression. In this episode Paul outlines some best practices on how to make graphics and text gel, and as always, there are great examples too.

AT&T Sues NASCAR over Cingular’s “Jack”

By now almost everyone has heard this new tagline: “Cingular is now the new AT&T.” But apparently NASCAR is not listening. Word is out today that the telecom giant is suing NASCAR for not allowing it to change Jeff Burton’s Cingular-branded race car with new AT&T branding. (If these phone companies would stop merging things would be a lot less messy, but I digress.)

The proposed change included putting the AT&T logo on the back quarter panel of the car where currently the Cingular name resides. It doesn’t seem like this change would be a big problem, hence the lawsuit, but word is spreading that there is a push from Sprint-Nextel (They’re a sponsor of the Nextel Cup Series) to shoulder AT&T out of the sport.

As a bit of background, VSA Partners designed the Cingular logo–named Jack–in 2000. VSA Partner Jaime Koval headed up the design with the idea of creating a mark that was “a strong graphic symbol, but is also had to be soft and playful.” This is yet another successful logo design & identity project put out to pasture. So long, Jack.
