Logo Design Podcast 9: Iconic Logos

Paul delves into the seedy underworld of Icons for this podcast. Threats of takeover by these style logos abound…fear of the traditional logo going the way of the Dodo seem abundant. No doubt, icons are very simple, effective marketing tools…assuming you can get one with some staying power. Reality says that most businesses probably are not the ‘iconic logo fits all approach’, but when they do and the designer can pull it off, the results are sometimes very impressive.

An interesting thing about the Northwest Airlines logo (that a friend pointed out to me several years ago) is that the small triangle along with the circle, forms a compass that is pointing north-west.

  2. Paul Says:

Yes, I should have mentioned that. And I’m an idiot, because I neglected to realize that the NWA logo is now changed to this http://www.nwa.com/ which makes no sense to me. No compass, no awesome NW. Depressing.

  3. Daniel at Logobee.com Says:

Yeah, when was that NWA logo changed?

  4. Daniel at Logobee.com Says:

Sorry, but who also designed that logo?

  5. Paul Says:

TrueBrand did. SpeakUp had a good article about it here.

I think this is a case of the client totally misusing the logo and making it crappier than the design firm intended. They flipped it in some cases to fit on the other side of the planes and made the compass point facing northEAST. Shame.

Where on monochrom is that article?

Here’s the link. Thank you for caring.

the NWA logo look awful! Any idea what’s the meaning behind it?
