I think the "zipper" of the Sydney logo is supposed to be the Opera House.

I realize I'm late in commenting to this article, but I appreciate your critique of this design. I've been trying to appreciate anything about this design that merits it's astronomical price tag, but am coming short. Any interviews by the design agency explaining the thought process?

If it were shock value, then let's look at Benetton. If it's to be youthful and edgy (what an ambiguous word) then let's look at QuickSilver.
If it's to emulate the graffiti artwork emerging out of Britain then look at banksy's work. You'll find genuine, clever thought put into those targeted brands/art. A statement runs hollow when it's so rude and shallow. People are tired of elitest design and are hungry for something more intellectual, thought provoking, interesting and perhaps even elegant. This logo hits NONE of those objectives.

I gave the reasons why the color choice was wrong (and I do mean wrong, not just a matter of taste) in the podcast, but I'll repeat the 2 main reasons here:
1-Magenta is the fastest to degrade in UV light. That makes it the wrong choice for a logo that will be used extensively in external signage.

2-The colors magenta, blue and yellow have nothing whatsoever to do with the London Olympics. It's almost like they did it on purpose to create controversy.

Picasso? Really? You really think this resembles his work at all? I need to go lie down...does someone else want to take this one?

Really, i don't understand why everywhere i see comments about this logo. For me is Good logo . Think about it when Picasso start it , you can put it in the same pot. Actualy for me is in the synthetic cubism part. And is a well done logo. And the colors who cares
the artist choose his colors and must be respected at the end is an product of someones intelligence.

Error report: Turns out Wolff Olins is a company, not a specific person. Yeah, I'm an idiot. I regret the error. I do stand by my opinion of their logo.

I just can't see the 2012 logo happening. Its either too kidish or way, way too adult depending on how you look at it. And the colour scheme is just terrible.

It simply must change. It's going to be the most talked about stupid decision of 2012 if they decide to keep this logo.
