By focusing on the essentials, you allow passers-by to quickly focus on them as well. Generally the 3 second rule is the standard to live by. If someone cannot visually ingest and comprehend your logo in 3 seconds or less, get out the scissors and start trimming!

If you have any questions for Paul, or any feedback, give us a shout , we'd love to hear from you.

p.s. Thank you to all those that have sent the great comments, keep 'em coming! Hopefully these podcasts will continue to inspire you as well.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this weeks episode, Paul takes two logos that were submitted for review, and gives them a much needed makeover. Many times a client will insist on maintaining most, if not ALL elements of their current logo in a redesign. <itunes:summary>White space, an easy way to take good art, and screw it up. White space is something that all designers should think about more often, but seldom take the time to do so. In logo design podcast 14, Paul shows you how to take your artwork, and test for the correct amount of white space. This gentle relationship between the positive and negative elements in design, is key to overall balance, proportion, and design hygiene. White space plays a very important role in design symmetry, and symmetry is what keeps the eye's attention from straying.

<itunes:summary>Hello once again, and sorry for the layoff. In this episode, Paul takes one of our logo review clients, and gives their logo an extreme makeover! He shows how you can take clipart, and turn it in to something respectable. Since many clients like the look of clipart enough to use it as their company brand, and sometimes actually insist on using it over original design, Paul illustrates how you can use this to your advantage as a solid starting point. You already know what the customer likes, now you can proceed from the there and put your own original touch to the design, and give them back something unique that they will love.

<itunes:summary>In this star-studded episode, Paul dives in to originality in logo design. Often times it is very easy to think you are being creative and original if you just sit down and create something from scratch. Problem is, often times we are influenced by things we have already seen and are just too lazy to research in an attempt to avoid plagiarism. There are some resources on the web that are in their infant stages of image recognition, and hopefully one day we will be able to submit a design, and get results back that show if anything has been created very similar to what we have done. But until that day, it is each designer's responsibility to do reasonable, proper research, and investigation to avoid plagiarizing another's logo.

<itunes:summary>This week, Paul takes us on a harrowing journey into 2 of the cardinal sins of logo design...1. Too much clutter. 2. Illegibility. The quickest way to lose a customer's attention, is have a logo that is difficult to read/understand. Sometimes, as designers, it is up to us to educate our clients and help them understand that in a logo, less is more. What tells people of their services is their marketing efforts, and the logo is there to back them up with the professional look.

How many no-no's can you find in this logo below? If you don't find any...please see Logodesign.com podcast 1-10 as well.

<itunes:summary>Not to beat a dead horse...but...well actually, I could see a dead horse in this logo. With the controversial 2012 Olympic Logo still fresh in everyone's minds, we decide to look a little bit more in depth at the saga of Olympic Logos. Good thing they don't have the Logo Draw as an official event. Anyways, it looks like Logoworks is trying some damage control in an effort to show what great ideas the design community REALLY has to offer...and for FREE. They built this website where you can create your own logo for 2012 and submit it for voting. UK visitors can go to your very own site HERE. We also found a similar site here, not sure whose it is. It's a neat deal, and you can see alot of different ideas that designers across the world have come up with. Give it a try...anything's better.

<itunes:summary>Paul delves into the seedy underworld of Icons for this podcast. Threats of takeover by these style logos abound...fear of the traditional logo going the way of the Dodo seem abundant. No doubt, icons are very simple, effective marketing tools...assuming you can get one with some staying power. Reality says that most businesses probably are not the 'iconic logo fits all approach', but when they do and the designer can pull it off, the results are sometimes very impressive.

<itunes:summary>No one likes a logo with bad-breath, in this episode Paul comes up with a cure for the dreaded 'Halitosis Logo', his solution...? Apply a little Crest. Okay that was a lame pun, but in reality a crest style logo can help you take generally spastic and disjointed designs and give them some nice cohesion. They are not as easy as they may appear, but Paul gives a step-by-step look at how to start at a concept and work it into a nice lather, then polish that into a gleaming piece of crested goodness.

<itunes:summary>The latest in the Logo Design podcast series, deals with inspiration from quite possibly the best movie created to date...Frank Miller's '300'. Paul was inspired to create a podcast that is still informative, yet directly influenced by this movie. The focus here is on creating custom brushes that allow you a very artistic, free form, gritty feel...or depending on how you create and use them, the complete opposite. This is the beauty of the brush feature in Illustrator. Paul re-creates the 300 logo using custom brushes, and gives some screen captures that will help you do the same. Enjoy!

By now almost everyone has heard this new tagline: "Cingular is now the new AT&T." But apparently NASCAR is not listening. Word is out today that the telecom giant is suing NASCAR for not allowing it to change Jeff Burton's Cingular-branded race car with new AT&T branding. (If these phone companies would stop merging things would be a lot less messy, but I digress.)

This is bizarre. I'm reading today that Brussels Airlines is changing their logo because superstitious passengers have been complaining that the logo is unlucky. The current logo is a series of 13 dots that form a lower case "b", but now the airlines has altered the design by adding an additional dot to the logo, now totaling fourteen. Apparently this is a much safer and luckier number.

Like them or not, the Bears and the Colts are two NFL teams that have a lot of history. And one thing that these two teams have in common is their rich tradition and lasting loyalty. Not to mention they both have great logos.

Both the Bears' and the Colts' logos are tried and true. They have passed the test of time, not needing a major overhaul to still look great--a true indicator of lasting, good design (Think Ford, GE, Coca-Cola; their logos have hardly changed in a hundred years). Here's a bit of history on each team's logo.

Do you think you know what the Google logo looks like? How about Amazon? Flickr? Now you can find out for sure by taking a neat little quiz at GuessTheLogo.com. The quiz takes the same basic logo and changes just one or two things about it, making for a difficult quiz, actually. On my first try, I only scored in the 27th percentile out of everyone who had taken it.

Last July, the European Union launched a logo design contest for their 50th anniversary, an event that inspired more than 1,700 entries from design professionals and students from around Europe. Recently, the EU announced the winner of the contest: Szymon Skrzypczak, a 23-year-old design student from Poland.

Forget winning streaks, MVPs and playoff hopes. When it comes to the NFL, all we at logodesign.com care about is which team has the best logo. And to find out, we polled 25 expert designers, who ranked each of the NFL's team logos best to worst. The designers said the Denver Broncos have the best logo design, followed by the New England Patriots and Houston Texans. You can see the rest of the Top 10 List here.

Think these logos look an awfully lot alike? Both use green, both are circular, both use the words "Star" and "Coffee", both have stars and both have mythical-style illustrations in the center. And of course, both are logos for stores that sell coffee.

Recently, I wrote about a company that will put your logo on postage stamps. And this morning I came accross another interesting concept in the October issue of Inc Magazine that says Mars, Inc, maker of M&Ms, will now print your company logo on the much-loved "melt in your mouth, not in your hand" candies.

Fujifilm yesterday adopted an updated logo that will replace the one developed in 1980 and used for the past 26 years. The 72-year-old film giant announced the much-needed new logo back in July, but officially began using the mark October 1.

The Internet has changed the way graphic design is done, especially for small businesses. There are many affordable solutions available online for SMB's and other organizations who are on a tight budget but still need a professional image. Now there are even places where you can get a free logo design.
