Great post, I have to agree with Mike here, in that the hardest solutions are often the most rewarding in the end.

I really appreciate the feedback given. I've been designing for a while, but I just don't have the experience and knowledge you guys have. Thanks again for the advice. Great service! Adam

One possible solution to the overused sphere could be to introduce a couple of organic shapes or ad them to the sphere – a sort of "metaball", which would give the mark a more lava-like feel. The text is not very friendly and seems too serious for the mark. Try a sans serif font and maybe play with the lettering moving it slightly up and down which would make the logo come to life.

The use of all caps and a simple mark is nice, but as stated the ball is a little generic. The spacing between the word LAVA is too much as compared to the word BALL. The name of this company could really allow you to use some fun text treatment, and you wouldn't even have to use a mark.

Customizing text and using it as the logo allows you to create a striking image, that can be easily reproduced in any media. There is no better way to put your mark into a logo than by the use of custom text.

Very simple logo. When creating logos it is best to steer clear of gradients. If you must use a gradient it is better to gradiate to at least 10% of the color rather than to white. This prevents problems when using the logo in print form.

Another concern is that the ball is so generic. It is always good to create a mark that is harder to replicate and easier to dissern at a first glance. There are probably hundreds of logos out there that could be mistaken for this one. Set yourself apart.
